NPS Calculator
Estimate your NPS corpus and pension at retirement
What is a NPS Calculator?
The National Pension System (NPS) is a government-backed retirement savings scheme that offers market-linked returns with tax benefits. This calculator estimates your corpus at retirement (age 60) and the monthly pension you'll receive based on your monthly contributions, expected returns, and annuity allocation.
NPS is unique because at maturity, you must invest at least 40% of the corpus in an annuity plan (which gives you a monthly pension) and can withdraw the remaining 60% as a lump sum. Understanding this split is crucial for planning your retirement income.
When to Use This Calculator
- Estimating your NPS corpus and pension amount at age 60
- Deciding how much to contribute monthly to NPS for a target pension
- Comparing NPS returns with other retirement options (PPF, EPF, mutual funds)
- Understanding the impact of the 40% annuity requirement on your retirement income
- Planning the additional tax deduction under Section 80CCD(1B) — up to ₹50,000

Frequently Asked Questions
What returns can I expect from NPS?+
Historical NPS returns (2009-2024): Equity (E) fund: 12-14% CAGR, Corporate Bond (C): 8-10%, Government Securities (G): 8-9%. For planning, use 9-10% for an auto-choice or moderate allocation. Actual returns depend on your asset allocation choice.
What are the tax benefits of NPS?+
NPS offers triple tax benefits: (1) Up to ₹1.5L deduction under 80CCD(1) within the 80C limit, (2) Additional ₹50,000 under 80CCD(1B) — exclusive to NPS, (3) At maturity, the 60% lump sum is tax-free. These benefits apply only under the old tax regime.
Is NPS better than PPF or mutual funds for retirement?+
NPS has the extra ₹50,000 tax benefit and lower fund management charges (0.01%). But it locks your money until 60 and forces 40% into an annuity (which gives low returns of 5-6%). PPF is safer with guaranteed 7.1% but has a ₹1.5L/year limit. Mutual funds offer full flexibility but no NPS-specific tax benefits.
What happens to NPS if I change jobs?+
NPS is fully portable — your PRAN (account number) stays the same regardless of employer or city. You can continue contributing as an individual even if your new employer doesn't offer NPS. There's no need to transfer or close the account.
