Corpus vs FIRE Number Over Time

What is a FIRE Calculator?

FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) is a movement focused on aggressive saving and investing to build a corpus large enough that investment returns cover all living expenses — making work optional. This calculator determines your FIRE number (the corpus you need), projects when you'll reach it based on your current savings rate, and shows you the year-by-year path to financial independence.

The math is based on the 4% rule (or your chosen withdrawal rate): you need a corpus of 25-30x your annual expenses to sustain yourself indefinitely. The calculator factors in inflation, investment returns, and your current savings to give you a realistic FIRE timeline.

When to Use This Calculator

  • Finding out your FIRE number — the corpus needed to make work optional
  • Seeing how increasing your savings rate by 10% changes your FIRE age
  • Understanding the relationship between expenses, savings rate, and retirement timeline
  • Planning a CoastFIRE or BaristaFIRE strategy (partial financial independence)
  • Stress-testing your retirement plan against different inflation and return scenarios

Key Terms

FIRE Number

The investment corpus needed to sustain your living expenses from returns alone. Typically calculated as Annual Expenses ÷ Safe Withdrawal Rate (e.g., ₹6L expenses ÷ 4% = ₹1.5 crore).

Safe Withdrawal Rate (SWR)

The percentage of your corpus you can withdraw annually without running out of money over a 30+ year retirement. The famous '4% rule' comes from the Trinity Study and is adjusted for Indian conditions.

Savings Rate

The percentage of your income that you save and invest. In the FIRE community, this is the single most important number — higher savings rate = earlier FIRE date.

CoastFIRE

The point where your existing investments will grow to your FIRE number by traditional retirement age (60) without any additional contributions. You still work, but don't need to save.

LeanFIRE vs FatFIRE

LeanFIRE: retiring on a minimalist budget (₹3-4L/year expenses). FatFIRE: retiring with a comfortable lifestyle (₹12L+ expenses). Your approach determines your FIRE number.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the 4% rule and does it work in India?+
The 4% rule says you can withdraw 4% of your corpus in year 1 and adjust for inflation thereafter, with a very high probability of not running out in 30 years. In India, with higher inflation (6% vs 3% in the US) and potentially higher returns, a 3-3.5% withdrawal rate is safer. This calculator lets you adjust the rate.
How much do I need to retire early in India?+
It depends entirely on your annual expenses. At a 4% withdrawal rate: ₹5L/year expenses → ₹1.25 crore; ₹10L/year → ₹2.5 crore; ₹20L/year → ₹5 crore. Add a buffer for healthcare and inflation. Most Indian FIRE aspirants target ₹3-7 crore.
Does this calculator account for inflation?+
Yes. The FIRE number is calculated using inflation-adjusted expenses — your ₹50,000/month expenses today will be much higher when you actually retire. The calculator projects the corpus needed at your target FIRE age, not today.
What about health insurance after early retirement?+
This is the biggest FIRE risk in India. Without employer coverage, a family health insurance policy costs ₹25,000–₹1L+/year and premiums increase with age. Factor this into your annual expenses. Many FIRE planners set aside a separate health corpus or assume higher expenses post-45.
Can I achieve FIRE on a ₹15 lakh salary?+
Yes, but it requires a high savings rate (50%+). At ₹15L salary, if you save ₹7.5L/year and invest at 12% return, you'd accumulate about ₹2.6 crore in 15 years. Whether that's enough depends on your expenses. Reducing expenses is often more powerful than increasing income for FIRE.
